Project Story

Miller Consulting Engineers provided structural engineering services for the replacement of Amanda Trail Bridge—a 165-foot pedestrian suspension bridge located near Cape Perpetua along Oregon’s scenic coastline. Designed in collaboration with public agencies, tribal partners, and community organizations, the bridge reestablishes a vital connection along the Oregon Coast Trail while honoring the cultural and historical significance of the site. The structure was designed not only to meet modern accessibility and safety standards, but to evoke a sense of reflection and reverence in a natural setting deeply rooted in Indigenous history.

The suspension bridge design was selected for its long-span capabilities, minimal environmental footprint, and adaptability to the site’s challenging terrain and limited construction access. The structure features galvanized steel towers and rock-anchored cable supports, elevated light-framed approaches, and composite lumber decking to reduce long-term maintenance in the harsh coastal environment. Raised approximately 17 feet above Amanda’s Creek, the bridge clears historic flood zones and debris paths, offering a safe and resilient crossing for future generations of hikers and visitors. The project exemplifies how thoughtful engineering can respond to both environmental challenges and the deeper cultural narratives embedded in the landscape.
